Official guide or fake guide: the difference is legal
A Moroccan tour guide holds a professional card issued by the Ministry of Tourism, with photo and number. They have trained, passed an exam and work legally. Ask to see it: an official guide shows it without hesitation.
People who approach visitors around Jemaa el-Fna or at the medina gates offering to "show the way" mostly do not have this card. The walk nearly always ends in a shop that pays them a commission, and the price quoted at the start is never the final one. Keep this in mind from the moment you land at Marrakech Menara Airport.
How much a guide costs in Marrakech in 2026
| Service | Typical price | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Official guide, medina | MAD 300–500 | Half day |
| Official guide, full day | MAD 500–800 | 8 hours |
| Group guided tour | €15–30 / person | 3–4 hours |
| Day trip with driver-guide | €60–120 / vehicle | Full day, Ourika or Agafay |
Prices are for the guide only, excluding entry fees, lunch and transport. A tip of MAD 50 to 100 at the end is customary if the tour was good, but not compulsory.
Travel times from Marrakech Menara Airport
The airport is 6 km south-west of the medina, on the Agafay side: most tours are within easy reach after landing.
| Tour | Distance | Drive |
|---|---|---|
| Medina, Jemaa el-Fna | ≈ 6 km | 15–20 min |
| Majorelle Garden, Gueliz | ≈ 8 km | 20–25 min |
| Agafay desert | ≈ 35 km | 40–50 min |
| Ourika valley (Setti Fatma) | ≈ 65 km | 1 h 15–1 h 30 |
| Imlil, High Atlas | ≈ 65 km | 1 h 15–1 h 30 |
| Ouzoud falls | ≈ 170 km | 2 h 45–3 h |
| Essaouira | ≈ 185 km | 2 h 30–3 h |
Indicative times outside rush hour. For a tour on the day you land, stick to the medina or Agafay: the Atlas and Essaouira need a full day.
Where a guide really makes a difference
The medina and souks, on day one. In three hours you understand how the districts fit together, locate the gates and learn where to buy what and at what price: the rest of your stay becomes much easier. Historic monuments, where the lack of signage leaves the visit silent without commentary. Trips into the Atlas and the valleys, where the guide also interprets Berber.
For wandering Jemaa el-Fna in the evening, for dinner, a pool day or an all-inclusive Agafay package: a guide adds nothing, the escort is already part of the service.
Book before you go, or on the spot?
Your riad or hotel almost always works with an official guide it knows: the simplest option, and the price is still negotiable. Online platforms let you compare reviews, choose the language and lock in the price, which helps in high season. The self-guided audio tours shown above are done on your own, with your phone and headphones, from around €10: a budget way to discover the medina at your own pace, with no meeting time. To reach the medina from the airport, book a transfer; for an independent trip, see car hire and our Marrakech–Essaouira and Marrakech–Ouarzazate guides.
