Car hire

Hiring a car in Marrakech: the full guide

Morocco is one of the cheapest countries to hire a car in, and one where the contract matters most. Here is what you will actually pay, and the ten minutes of precaution that prevent 90 % of disputes.

First: do you need one?

For a stay entirely within Marrakech, no. The medina is pedestrian, parking is handled by informal attendants, the traffic takes adjusting to, and a taxi costs MAD 15–50 a ride. A car sitting five days outside a riad is money burnt.

For Ourika, Imlil, Agafay, Essaouira, the Tichka or Ouarzazate, it changes everything: Morocco's main roads are in good condition and independence beats any organised tour.

The most efficient arrangement

Two days in the medina without a car, then a hire for the three days of excursions, collected in Gueliz or at the airport. You save two days of hire and two nights of parking, for exactly the same itinerary.

Add fuel — MAD 12–14 a litre of diesel — motorway tolls towards Casablanca or Agadir, and the excess waiver if you take it.

Deposit and excess: the two traps

The deposit runs from MAD 5,000 to 15,000, held on a credit card in the main driver's name. Prepaid and some deferred-debit cards are refused. Check your limit before travelling: it is the leading cause of refusal at the desk, and it cannot be fixed there.

The basic contract's excess is high. Three options: carry it yourself, buy the hire company's waiver (€10–20 a day), or use cheaper third-party excess cover — in which case you pay for damage up front and reclaim afterwards.

The inspection: the best-value ten minutes of your trip

This is where disputes are won or lost. Before leaving, film the car from every angle — wheels, windscreen, roof, sills, interior, fuel level — with timestamping on. Have every scratch noted on the collection form, including the smallest. On return, repeat exactly the same sequence.

Also check that the hi-vis vest, warning triangle, spare wheel and jack are present: their absence will be charged to you, and the gendarmerie checks the first two.

Driving in Morocco

A national licence is enough for a tourist stay. Driving is on the right, limits are 60 km/h in town, 100 km/h on open roads and 120 km/h on motorways, with numerous active fixed and mobile cameras. Fines are settled on the spot against a receipt.

The local rule to absorb: priority is negotiated by eye contact more than by sign. Two-wheelers, carts and pedestrians appear without warning, and at night outside towns some vehicles run without lights. Keep licence, contract and passport to hand: gendarmerie checks are frequent on intercity roads.

Frequently asked questions

What should you budget to hire a car in Marrakech?

€25–35 a day for a city car, €35–45 for a compact, €55–90 for an SUV and €45–60 for an automatic. Add fuel at around MAD 12–14 a litre, tolls and any excess waiver.

What deposit is required for car hire in Morocco?

MAD 5,000 to 15,000 depending on category, held on a credit card in the main driver's name. Prepaid cards are refused: check your authorisation limit before you travel.

How do you avoid a dispute with a Moroccan hire company?

Film the car from every angle on collection, timestamping on, wheels and windscreen included, have every scratch noted on the form, and repeat the same sequence on return. Also check the hi-vis vest, triangle, spare wheel and jack are present.

Is an international driving permit needed in Morocco?

No, a national licence is sufficient for a tourist stay. Keep it with the rental agreement and your passport: gendarmerie checks are frequent on intercity roads.

Should you collect the car at the airport?

Only if you are leaving straight away on a road trip. If your first days are in the medina, hire later in town: the car would be unusable there and you would also pay for parking.
