Hiring a car by the month in Marrakech
Beyond two weeks the logic of hiring changes: daily rates collapse, but insurance, servicing and mileage become the central questions. Here is how to negotiate properly.
The rate collapses, but not everywhere
Tapering is steep in Morocco. A city car at €30 a day on a short hire commonly falls to €12–18 a day over a full month, or €350–550 monthly. Local agencies are often more flexible than international brands on this kind of duration, and the price is genuinely negotiable — especially outside high season.
| Category | 1 week | 1 month |
|---|---|---|
| City car | €150–210 | €350–550 |
| Compact | €210–280 | €500–750 |
| Compact SUV | €350–550 | €850–1,300 |
The five points to lock down in writing
- Mileage. Many monthly deals are capped, often around 3,000 km. If you plan to head south or make several runs to the coast, have the allowance and the per-kilometre excess charge spelled out.
- Servicing. Who pays for the oil change, tyres and service over a long hire? Beyond a month the question is real, and the answer belongs in the contract.
- Breakdown and replacement. How quickly is a vehicle swapped, and within what area? A breakdown in Ouarzazate is not handled like one in Gueliz.
- Insurance and excess. Over a long hire the company's excess waiver becomes very costly: always compare with annual third-party cover.
- The deposit. It stays held for the whole period: check your bank limit supports that over several weeks.
Short-term leasing: the other route
For three months and more, some Moroccan companies offer long-term rental packages with a recent vehicle, servicing included and insurance built in. The monthly rate is close to a well-negotiated conventional hire, but the content is fuller and the car more reliable.
These packages mainly suit business stays, retirees wintering in Morocco and long remote-working trips. They do require a fuller file: proof of address, sometimes a Moroccan address.
On a long but largely urban stay, the total of taxis, a few chauffeured days and two or three short hires often comes to less than a month of a car sitting idle. Do that sum before signing: in Marrakech, a car only earns its keep on the days you leave the city.
Living with a car in Marrakech
Street parking is handled by informal attendants in hi-vis vests: MAD 5–10 for a few hours, around MAD 20 overnight, paid on your return. Many residences and riads have an arrangement with a nearby car park — ask, it is safer and simpler over a long period.
Finally, allow for the climate: in summer a car parked in the sun passes 60 °C inside, which damages plastics, device batteries and tyres. Even rough shade changes the car's life and your daily comfort.
